How does a cleanroom work?

A cleanroom refers to a controlled environment and it is used by a wide range of industries from electronic and automotive to pharmaceutical industry. The aircraft industry, for example, uses a specially made cleanroom. Modern labs we know today could not work without cleanrooms. Moreover, they are used in the plastic and packaging industry and during modern food production. The number of industries using cleanroom is increasing day by day. These specially made spaces provide a perfect environment for manufacturing products that are sensitive to contamination or for products that are dangerous for their own environment. During production or testing in a cleanroom, the filtered air assures adequate protection in the room to minimize contamination that may affect the product.

What is the difference between panel, modular and softwall cleanrooms?

The walls in a cleanroom can be made following a variety of designs. The most durable and air-tight structures are made of modern flat-panel sandwich elements where all the cables of electronic devices are hidden that are required for cleanroom production (electrical plugs, control panels, technology piping, weak current network). The main advantage of this design is the quick and flexible setup that allows fast manufacturing technology.

The modular cleanroom walls are assembled from individually produced elements according to a predetermined raster. Their advantage lies in quick design and the possibility of subsequent dismounting. However, unique production means that manufacturing of the walls takes a longer time and it becomes a difficulty to alter the design later in the process.

Softwall cleanrooms provide the simplest solution. Instead of solid walls, space is separated by an antistatic ribbon curtain. There are no air-tight spaces, therefore, workstations in softwall cleanrooms are referred to as ‘tents’. Their advantages are mobility and low cost.

How do I know which type of cleanroom do I need for my company?

There are two basic questions one must ask before deciding on the type of cleanroom: What is the smallest particle size I need to filter out? Or what is the lowest number of particles I need to maintain? Most industries have their own standards that can be easily searched online. However, in most cases, the buyer or the investor needing a cleanroom can provide useful information. With a brief research, generally used cleanroom category in the industry can be precisely defined.

What characterizes positive pressure cleanrooms?

Cleanrooms with positive pressure are usually built to protect the indoor environment from any contamination coming from outside. By maintaining positive pressure inside, small particles are forced out of the cleanroom. This positive pressure means + 15 / + 25 Pa relative to atmospheric pressure outside.

What characterizes negative pressure cleanrooms?

The goal of negative pressure or depression cleanrooms is not to let indoor air out. Generally, they are used in areas where the products being manufactured pose an environmental risk.
